Venom was ultimately cancelled after Spider-Man 4 was scrapped in 2010. In 2009, Gary Ross, who was then rewriting the latest draft of the unproduced Spider-Man 4, was assigned to rewrite the Venom script and direct the movie, in which Venom would be an anti-hero rather than a supervillain. Reese later revealed that they had written two drafts for the film and that the studio was pushing the film forward. In September 2008, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese signed on to write the film. Jacob Aaron Estes was commissioned to write a script, but it was rejected the following year. Spider-Man 3 producer Avi Arad revealed a Venom spin-off film was in the works in July 2007.

Apparently Venom would have been portrayed as an antihero and that the villain Carnage was apparently supposed to be the film's antagonist. Little is known about the supposed plotline of the film. It was to follow Spider-Man 4 featuring the character of Venom as the main character. While the aforementioned project didn’t materialize, PlayStation owners can continue to enjoy Insomniac Games’ take on Spider-Man.Venom was the planned, but ultimately cancelled spin-off film in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movie trilogy. The development of the Wii version was given to Eurocom, and development of the Nintendo DS version was given to Vicarious Visions. Several development studios pitched for the title, however, it was ultimately given to Radical Entertainment, for development on XBOX 360 / PlayStation 3 / PC. Some developers of the project have stated that the release date they were informed of was as early as April 2011 and as late as January 2012, so it’s likely that it was largely undecided early on.ĭevelopment of Spider-Man 4 began sometime in late 2008. The movie / game tie-in was set to release on May 6, 2011, however issues with Sony / Columbia caused the film to be cancelled and retooled as The Amazing Spiderman, which released on July 3, 2012.
